Champions League
Currently on 48 points

3rd AND 4th last season both finished on 66

Chelsea lost 12 games, won 20

To date we have won 14 and lost 7

That's potentially 6 more wins, of those left the following are eminently winnable:

West Brom, Burnley, Brighton, Newcastle, Southampton,

And 1 bonus win from Everton, Wolves, Arsenal, Leicester, Chelsea or Man Utd

I tell ye, it's coming home !

The Exile.

''Europe can wait a year for the greater good''

Nah, that's just bollocks and a typical small time mind set of a WHU supporter, that is all too familiar down the years and why we are never taken seriously by our peers.

You have take what you can when you can, we may not have another season like this one.

Re: Champions League
The Exile.

Don't get me wrong, i'd fucking love us to finish top 4/5/6 for any european football

But we have massively punched above our weight so far and voided injuries in key players (Antonio aside), but would this squad, even with a few additions coped with an extra game a week this time of the season and maintained the same league position?

That's my point.

We've already made our point this year regardless of what happens. I'd rather we just went for the League, FA and League cup next year.

Europe can wait a year for the greater good.

Messi just scores a worldly - no sign of Iniesta on the pitch either.

Re: Champions League
TMTY - you're talking as if it's set in stone that we'll finish 8th just because the public say so. Well of course that's what they think - after all, we were in a relegation fight last year. But they haven't yet caught up with the fact that we're a different side this season. I will be very surprised if we finish lower than 6th and not at all surprised if we make the CL.

Re: Champions League
I take it most on here will have seen what the public reckon the final table looks like, which suggests 8th for us.

Every single supporter on the planet would have taken that before the first game.

And whist it might seem a disappointing outcome given our current position, it could be a blessing.

Even with a few additions, the current squad, which has worked wonders, wouldn't be able to cope with the extra fixtures if it happened next season.

I'd prefer we just added the required players and then just focused on the league next year and improve from 8th to 5th or 6th and then maintain/push on from there.

Re: Champions League
Its not cos of Ronaldo they wont progress, its cos they have a rookie Pirlo in charge.

Agree, Pirlo is a very poor manager. Ronaldo has has scored nearly 30 goals this season. Got rid of experienced players for unknowns. There is no creativity in their midfield and they pass sidewards too much.

Says a lot when you consider that none of the Juve central midfield would get into our west ham

Same at Barcelona, Messi hasnt become a poor player overnight, Barcelona players are not of the same calibre they were 2 seasons ago.

Re: Champions League
Watching them last night I wouldnt blame Pirlo.
Their window with the recent finals has closed.
Buffon is gone & all their top class defenders are gone or pensionable.
Porto are no world beaters either ... Toni Martinez came on late

Man City , Bayern or PSG are the likely winners.
Probably Bayern as the other two have a phobia

Maybe PSG. Think he will still want to play at the highest level, not US or China, etc.

Re: Champions League
To be fair to Juventus they had lost a couple of finals and thought they just needed one more step ... the player who beat them.
You'd think its time to give it up now and move on.
Not sure what his contract situation is or where he would go given he reckons he wants to play on to the World Cup (& beyond).

Re: Champions League
After last year, getting into any European competition by dint of the number of points won would be an amazing achievement.

Of course we haven't a snowball's chance in hell of winning either this time around because we lack the depth of quality needed and a spate of Sullivan panic buys if/when we qualify will make matters worse.

However, if we do happen to qualify, I think the aim should be to stay in, if we can, as far as the Xmas break, then concentrate on the domestic competitions to try and get back into Europe again the following season.

That first foray should have provided all the needed information on where we need to focus spent to make us more regular players of European football.

To be fair, you didn’t need to be a genius to imagine that the plan might not work! How old is Ronaldo, 36 or something?

More fool them.

Re: Champions League
Paid €100m transfer fee for Ronaldo. €54m a year to win the Champions League.

Since signing, to get them over the line and win it, they have been knocked out by Ajax, Porto & Lyon and have not made it past the quarter final. About to not win the league.

probably not the return on investment they were hoping for.
